I'm horribly offended. My family has owned tons of BMWs and they've all been exceptional cars. Nothing has even gone wrong on any of the 6 we've had (including a Tii).



In response to the origional question: ask the owner for service records. A BMW that has had all the scheduled maintenance done, with records to show, is worth its weight in gold. Even an '89.



There's no reason you couldn't get another 14 years on that car as is. No engine rebuilding necessary.
