According to Sports Car Color History Mazda RX7. I quote.

So for 1989, Mazda reshuffled the RX7 model line. The SE was gone, replaced by the GTU - but not the 1988 style GTU. Rather, it was the SE simply renamed the GTU, the biggest change being an upgrade to 15 in wheels, A new model, the GTUs, replaced the GTU as the nonturbo ultrasports version, with specifications even more near those of the Turbo. Another S-5 tell is on the front nose cap was reshaped with Mazda embossed , instead of the decal.

There is tons more info in the book, describing on kinds of details.

so probably the easiest way to tell gtu vs gtu sport would be the front brakes? 4 piston= sport and 2 piston = gtu/se?

wrong!!! theres no 2 piston brakes on any 2nd gen!!

a s5 GTU ( which is a basic model, dont know why they would even try to call it a gtu)

has single piston front calipers( but uses the large rotor) , and solid rear disk and 5 lug

all the models that came with the " big brakes" which are 4 piston front, and vented rears, 5 lug

were FOR S4, Sport, GTU, GXL, T2, VERT

and FOR s5 GXL,GTU-S, T2, VERT

then for s4 the SE, or base model had 4 lug and small single piston brakes.

Jenkin I like this topic. You have got to get some numbers off this car so we can look it up. Check the dash so we know what it was from the factory... If you have numbers I think we can get an answer. Do you already have the answer? O.K. chief talk later.
