i want to add a sub to my car for christmas. my current stereo stuff can be viewed in my sig. i want to get one 12" alpine type r. it comes in both 2 and 4 ohm. whats the difference? for the amp i want an alpine single channel 350 watt RMS amp. would this setup work well together? i wont be running the speakers off the amp, just from the head unit. is the 12" perhaps way more than i need because of the hatch back? im an audio newb

you just have to make sure the amp will handle a 2 ohm load, a sub

run in 2 ohm will put out more bass

maybe someone else will chime in but thats about it.

so getting the 2 ohm one would be a better idea than the 4?

as long as the amp can handle a 2 ohm load, its usually a matter of wiring the sub and the amp, you will run the amp in mono and wire the sub in a way so it will run in 2 ohm, probably a dual voice coil sub, so you run the + from the amp to + to one of the coils, then the - from the amp the - for the OTHER coil, then you run the remaining + - for the voice coils to each other.

the sub will hit harder and with more power going to them as long as the amp can handle it, you will have to pay attention to the sub's box design so it has enough space in it.

Running an amp at 2 ohms gives better sound quality....Right?

Because on most amps it says stuff like 500watts at 4 ohms....and 300watts at 2 ohms. Running them at 2 though will require alot of power and create alot of heat! I don't know too much about car stereos but alot of wattage at 2ohms is hard to accomplish!

Yes better sound quality, louder, etc... but you need to find a 2 ohm stable amp, or buy the 2 ohm and put a resistor on it in case you get a good amp in the future, I run mine at 2 ohms.

you got things backwords, the same amp in 2 ohm will put

out double the power then when its run in 4 ohm

so it would be 500watts in 4 ohm and 1000 watts in 2 ohm.

go with the 4ohm colis man if ur gonna run 1 type r sub so u can wire it parallel to achieve a 2ohm load. let me ask u a question what amp r u going to use with this setup ??? its crutial to see if the amp is 2ohm stable or 4ohm stable. i also have type r's in my FD but im running 4 10"s at a load of 2ohm's.
