I am not sure what you are asking here... you can buy spray bomb cans for $3.00 or more or less... but if you what some primer that is gonna fill in small dings and things like that then around $60.00 a quart.. then you have other additives to consider.. umm getting a spray gun.. 50.00 to 1000.00 that is if you are gonna to it yourself.. I have no idea what someone would charge just to primer the car... I will have to get some pics up of my fb in the works.. I think I am still a year away, but I rescued it and I think it will be nice when all done.. good luck

ok sorry for the confusion. ill clarify it. say i bought an FD but it had no paint or primer. i want to primer it so i can leave it outside under a tarp and not worry as much as it rusting without anything on it.since i cant afford a whole paint job how much would it be just to get it primered? i hope that helps

I don't think just leaving primer on a car for a long period of time without some sort of harder paint is the answer especially if you are just gonna cover it up.. umm maybe if it was gonna be garaged.. I still think it would rust up some... from reading your post in the intro section of this forum this is a car you have your sites set on correct? ok primer it spray bomb it with a color close to what you want and then get back to work on it in when the weather is fitting no matter what time of year it is.. also tell us about your purchase of an fd ... I love to read this forum.. it ROCKS

Primer WILL rust. There is this dude in a riced out civic, painted in primer grey. Rust all over

ok so to my original question about how much would it cost for a shop to primer it? then when i get the primer on (this will sound rice) but say i spray paint it until i can afford a paint job. i will not be driving it around. would this reduce the rust for now? also wat do paint jobs usually go for around here? i dont want the specifics of like depends on quality i juss want a nice black paint job. so around about number would be good thanks.

I've never gone to a shop and asked for a quote on primer only, lol. I would imagine, that if you sanded the body yourself, and were not concerned with the bodywork/paint texture, it could be easily done for just a couple hundred dollars.



DuPont makes an epoxy primer, that is designed to be used a top coat paint - it will not rust, fade, splotch, etc. For long term storage, I'd look into this if I was you. Stay away from Maaco!!

Where are you buying a car with no paint or primer?



You do realize that if a car sits with no paint or primer on it the metal is rusting as we speak?



That being said, if someone walked into my shop asking for primer only I would

probably not do it, especially on a car that someone else sanded.

You cannot primer a improperly sanded surface, and that includes

proper metal treatments and the sanding itself.





Or I would make you sign a waiver that you will not come back

and complain about anything on the car, which for some shady shops would mean they could do whatever they wanted to do at that point.

A good shop will make you sign the waiver so that in 2 years you cant come back bitching about the primer not holding up.



Urethane and epoxy primers can stay on a car without rusting for a little bit of time, but they cannot be exposed to the sun, they dont offer any protection from the sun's UV rays.



Not to mention the moisture under a tarp would kill the car anyhow.

Cars cannot sit under a $8.99 Home Depot poly tarp and not get damaged.
