Basicly unless your trying to paint a black car white or the car is sanded down to the metal you dont need primer. If your using transparent basecote and have diffrent color body panels than it is a good idea to primer the car, but other wise you dont need primer at all with a solid shade paint. If none of that applies to you than all you need to do to prep the existing paint for the new paint is wet sand all the surfaces to be painted with 400-600 grit. Make sure you use dish detergent in your sanding watter because it dosnt contain any wax, as the new paint wont stick to wax.

If you do need to primer the car use the dupont shade value 2 sealer, as it is about $35 a gallon found at any local autobody supply store. Usully a car only takes a quart but at that price who gives a crap. It mixes with reducer 4:1 so after the quart is mixed it will fill a standard HVLP gun about 4 times.

Hope that helps.

Generally you want to use a primer that is matched to the base/clear. Many paints now days are a system, meaning one uses a primer/base/clear that are designed to work together. This will yield the best compatability and longevity of the finished product.
