I'm coming back from half-moon bay on Sunday, taking 92 to 280 south-bound. Its a decently-fast on-ramp, pretty straight forward, not very tight at all. Theres this silver Mazdaspeed Miata in front me, he mis-judges the apex and drops 2 wheels on the inside sending rocks and dirt at my car. A large rock shattered the windshield and my hood (as I noticed after-the-fact) took a bruising. I catch up to the guy and get him to pull over. He walks over and I tell him:

"Hey, when you dropped your tires off in the dirt back there, you sent a hail of rocks at my car"

(no response)

"Look at my windshield, its shattered"

At this point, the guy totally changed expressions. He yells "you can't prove that" and immediately books it back to his car. I run behind the car and get a pic of his car and plate as he speeds away.

WTF was that? You know, if you do damage to someone's car (intentional or not) you have a duty to help cover the damage. I only wanted like 40 or 50 bucks to help cover the glass deductable. But since he chose to flee, im going to try and nail him. I filed a claim this morning and going after his insurance to cover all the damage. We'll see.

Pisses me off though. You do damage to someones property, be man and take care of your ****. I have the pic of his car, but im hesitant on posting on it public forum until the outcome is known.

Be interesting to see what head way you make with your gov resources/insurance with that..

Here in Canada, you will find you get no where with complaints like that, they all call it natural road hazard and tell you its your own problem for just being on the road.

3 years ago, a melon size rock came off a dump truck that I pass on the highway, it was on top of ledge of his box, he hit a bump in the highway, and off it came, bouncing toward me. It basically mashed the right through the windshield, just the plastic lamination was left, glass in my eyes and face, all over the dash of the truck I was driving, at that time a brand new Dodge sprinter with a 55k price tag.

Here we have a "truckers registry" they have a number sticker on them, in case they are driving erratic, speeding, dropping debris etc.. Its law they have to clear their truck of loose rocks. I chased down the truck, he new what happened, he tried to outrun me, which he almost did, the sprinter has a topend of 138 km/h. I called the RCMP, they said they dont get involved in civil matters, no matter what the law about loose rocks on the truck is, the truckers registry said they have no power to enforce any law or decision against a truck driver( its more or less a paper tiger that just takes money off trucking companies, if the trucker pays his registry dues, they will protect them from complaints. A government run shakedown racket). I got the driver to pull over, he admitted it was from his truck, his company refused any payment for damages, they said it was my fault for being on the highway, the excavators he was hauling for refused responsibility, even though they had a person to inspect leaving trucks. His insurance company denied any coverage, in the end, we ate the cost of the windshield, 1200.00. All that bureaucracy, paper pushing, tax dollar funding, safety initiatives, and it proved to be completely worthless to me the motorist... Good luck, I think in the end it will be more cost effective to just fix it yourself.

I hear about this stuff all the time. Get with your Highway Patrol and report the claim. Give all the info (place, mile post, direction, time and date) and let them know what happened (ie: the guy taking off). since you have a plate and a description of the guy, the HP can do a follow up and at least get the guys insurance info. for a collision report. Dont know what exactally they will cite him for but the least is leaving the scene of a collision (even if its minor, his car caused your car damage).

Careful to be accurate on your distance that you were behind him and if you were to close it could fall on you about road debrie and following distance.

whatever happened with that seth?

out here in Cali, the truck companies will pay for damages if you call and file a claim. i imagine you might still have to hassle with them sometimes.. but two of my brothers have had this happen to them, and they got the windshields replaced.
