UTI

i graduated march 10th from uti phoenix. i came home to minneapolis and applied at the 2 closest dealerships to my house for convienence. one wasn't hiring and the other hired me within a week. i'm starting at 11.50/hr, full benefits, full time, as a 'lube tech' with my own bay. i'm on a 90 day trial probation thing before my first raise. i must work for 6 months before i'm eligible for full time apprentice tech position with advanced training. today was my first day of work and it is definately cake. i'm not trying to show off or act tough. i'm just sharing my real life factual experience, because i wish someone would have done the same for me before i decided to go to school.
p.s. a big reason i stayed in uti was because i had the opportunity to graduate with an associates degree at around 20-25k for tuition. recently the tuition dues have raised and they no longer offer a degree. at this point i believe it's a good school but not worth the money for the final product....

BigTurbo?
Can you verify something for me?
Ask whomever was responsible for hiring you this question:
Did the name of the institution on the dgreee make a difference in your hiring decision? Would it had made a difference whether I graduated form UTI or the local tech school?

i actually did ask that question during my second interview. i said i noticed a lot of younger guys working as techs and asked what the common situation was for them when they applied. the service manager answered by saying, they basically were in the same boat i was in. just graduated from some sort of tech school, and were looking for an entry level job. then i asked what are the most common schools attended. he gave me a list of some cheap local schools, and some of the other big money ones. i finally asked if going to uti helped my resume compared to the most popular local tech school named dunwoody. he said that he has hired very good techs from uti in the past and it did sway his decision.
bottom line i hear your point. i could have been in the same position with less money... possibly. i can't 100 percent agree with you because i didn't try both methods out first hand.(and neither did you,,, i don't think?)... all i do know is that i tried to make the best out of my trainning by actually showing up and listening. by doing this i feel confident to tackle anything that is thrown at me with the appropriate support. i will admit i am lucky enough to have a service manager that had good experience with uti alumni. (but then again there is a difference between graduates, and trash talking drop outs.) everyone chooses a different path and i chose the one that was a lot more expensive, but gave me peace of mind in believing that the majority of the time you get what you pay for... even if it's overpriced.... which i totally agree, uti is!

you went to school to make 11.5/hr? that's not even 25k a year. the guys i know who work at dealerships went to a local tech school, and make just under 20/hr
