For Thoes Who Dont Know

Before airbags became standard on American passenger cars, I believe the government mandated some sort of "passive restraint" system. The solution to this requirement was "automatic seatbelts" which were pretty much on all new cars sold for a few years right around 1989. I know my '89 626 had them, and once you got used to 'em, it wasn't that much of a pain. They would occasionally threaten to strangle one of my passengers who wasn't familiar with their workings, however.

my passangers get hit on the head becuase rushing out of the car when you open the door puts the slider right in place of your head as you step out. I get a nice laugh every time someone gets hit

yea, the shoulder belt was on a motorized track that would run from down behind the outside shoulder to up onto the a-pillar, so that when you got in, it would retract and automatically "fasten" your shoulder belt for you, and when the car was shut off or you got out, it motored forward to let you out. Its really just a big PITA, my dad had a car with it and it was just an annoyance
