Would radio shack sell potentiometer wire? I think this is the stuff that my fuel sending unit is wrapped with on the mini pickup. My sending unit went dead and I finally got around to pulling the tank off again and traced it to the wrapped wire that has broke in several spots...pic to illistrate. Normal wire does not work, as I've tried. Must be some sort of variable resistant wire to wrap it in to take the measurement. Experts?

Thats a tough one!!! I dont think radio crap will have that/ or anyone/Its some old school stuff/I'd say try to use some from another old car or household stuff/ or in the worse case make another meter(sender) w a folating type using a regular potentiometer or trimer just IMO....Good Luck!

Can't you just use regular wrapping wire? The bright red/orange copper stuff that they wrap armatures with? Looks like a sweeper arm on a variable resistor - same crap as a mechanical speed control on an R/C car. I wonder if you could find a resistor block with the same properties and just swap it for the winding thing.

Thats what I'm wondering too. Although looks like the sending unit for a 55-72 Jeep CJ is identical, so I need to go around today and see if anyone has one to compare.

All wires are variable resistant. There resistance depends upon temperature. Find out what the specifics of that wire are, what it's specific resistance is, or its resistivity, then you might be able to find a wire that would work. (also find out if the resistance of that wire is based more on something else other than temperature)

Temperature and length...

my mercedes uses a coiled up peice of wire and a contact arm to be the variable dimmer.

plan b might be to adapt like a vw bug sender in there

Ok next question, who sells wire like that? I went to several places today and they all stared at me with a blank look. Is there a way I can convert normal wire myself with heat or a magnet or something crazy like that?
