Sony unveils OLED televison
actually it was quite the opposite, vhs is closer to hd-dvd and betamax to blueray except vhs won the battles with low price, blueray won the battle by throwing a lot of money at it. blueray, much like beta is/was the superior product, but more expensive. HD-DVD was cheap and that is what they were hoping would win them the battle (much like jvc's vhs win) it didn't.
I just find it odd that, if Microsoft were to win the console battle tomorrow and jack the prices up people would have a **** fit that microsoft was a bully and monopoly, however Sony edges hd-dvd out and the very next week jacks the ******* prices up and no one says a word.
It's really a pointless argument, the big question is; is blueray worth the extra expense? IMHO, no. Let's consider an initial investment of over 5 times the price of a dvd player, blueray discs are 2 or 3 times the price as well, when i can download the same movie in hd from xbox live for $5 or $6 bucks it hardly seems worth my while to lay out the cash for blue ray. I really think digital downloads will be the death of dvd and blueray I'm not sure there was any winning in this game. All that needs to happen is for someone to come along with something simple, you can plug into your tv, plug into your internet and for a flat monthly fee (like netflix) download an unlimited number of movies in HD and watch them on yer tv.
Pay Per View never made a good run at the rental market because price wise it couldn't compete, i can rent unlimited movies for $19.99 a month, that's only about 4 PPV's, now if they could get an unlimited service on PPV they could get in the game too.
