its a tax write off if they destroy em, but to write the value down, or sell at a discount, is not you just take a loss. otherwise ralph would have a stack of rx3 dashes, etc etc.
there was one point in the 80's where mazda said, why dont we just let the dealers scrap the returns themselves? due to abuse they dont do that anymore though
