Canadian humor is only funny to the comedian's family.

Yeah, but with what engine? Does it do the 1/4 in under 10 seconds?

Slot cars, model airplanes, go karts, motorcycles, VWs, Mazdas. There is a pattern there............

The first one was a side door 36 HP job. Then a beetle with chopped off fenders, a sun roof and a Corvair engine and automatic trans from my wifes wrecked 64. I had to fill my old sea bag with pea gravel and put it up front in the trunk to keep the front wheels on the ground. I could beat anything through first gear. A Powerglide. A drunk driver hit me in the *** and destroyed that one. No insurance of course.

The second was a camper with a pop top and sink and all of that. It had been tipped over into a ditch at speed. I fixed it all up, and ran it for years. I paid $50.00 for it. The first engine swallowed the exhaust valve right on schedule on a family trip to Black Hawk farms race track near Chicago. I limped in at 2 AM on 2 cylinders.

We removed the engine between sessions and sent the girls off to buy used head, oil pump 2 cylinders and pistons. Me and Tom Pomeroy (two time national champion in Formula Super Vee) rebuilt the shattered engine in the dirt and installed it before sundown on Saturday night. Ran fine and got me home to Columbus Sunday night. The soon to be driver who was along to learn about racing thought we would need to rent a van to tow the thing home.

I replaced the always failing exhaust valves with cut down Corvair valves, and ran that engine 5 more years. I sold it to my brother for $100.00 as we needed a tow vehicle. He drove it a week. Got drunk and hit a pole. End of VW involvement.

There is room in every young heart for a little VW.

That's absolutely poetic. Almost makes me miss the rotted-out '71 Super Beetle I owned for a while.

I'm guessing Lynn was referring to the old air-cooled VW's, not the poor-man's Audi's they're selling these days.

I bought a rusted out VW Rabbit for $200.00. Drove it 3 years. It broke in half one day when I ran through a rough intersection. I drove home holding the door shut with one hand. I sold the remains for $100.00. It was one of the first cars imported. 1500 CCs.

Some of the first year cars did not make it to the dealers. They were shipped with salt water as a coolant, to avoid the very high price of antifreeze in Germany. The salt water formed an electrolite,

(Battery) and ate the end off of the temp senders. The fans kicked on and ran the batteries dead flat.

By the time the first load made it to NJ, the dead batteries had burst and poured down the fender wells

lifting off a dose of paint. And rusting the crap out of everything.

Once they got some in to sell, another problem turned up. The oil pressure relief plunger was built into a blind hole. So eventually the blind hole filled with oil, and caused the plunger to lift off very slowly. This caused a huge spike in oil pressure right on startup. Blown out oil filter gaskets, split cans...................Then it got cold. The oil could not escape at all, and the oil pump shaft would twist off. No oil pressure. Red light on dash. New owner drives to dealer in order to get red light fixed. Too late. Rabbit needs a crank kit, or an engine. On the few that didn't need an engine, the fix was to remove the oil pan (disconnect one motor mount) lift engine, remove pump cover, drill out end of gallery, clean pump cover, reinstall everything. Paid 3 1/2 hours. If you make up a 1/2" tube with an aircraft drill 12" long in an air drill, with the tube taped into a shop vac hose you can cut that to 30 minutes flat. There was money being made, but not by VW.....................

The first year of the Chrysler shitbox sidewinder, had a VW engine. The second year they all got the Chrysler 1600 cc engine (piece of crap).
