Yea he can take it on a plane anyhow if he checks it. just cant carry it on.

yes he will be able to take a knife..if you do get him one try to make it a military "style" knife.. All he needs to do is pack it in his TA-50 bag no problems. something like this http://www.sogknives.com/store/fixed.html
