Reformatting a harddrive
#1
I have a Maxtor 80 gig harddrive. it is in a case and setup to plug into USB so its an external drive. Everynow and then it quits working, and i take it to the computer nerd i know, and he just reformats it or something. and charges like 40 bucks. How can i do this myself?im not a complete idiot on computers, so i am ABLE. when it quits working:
-IT has a light that is green when its on, it flashes red when there is an "error".
-u cant acces it in my computer, and it doesnt pop up as connected
-when u go into the control panel and look for it, it shows it connected and "working properly", but it isnt working properly
so was the guy JUST reformatting it to make it work? and how do i do that lol.
if it helps i have windows XP home

i'd send the damn drive back to maxtor it should **** on a regular basis.
you can download the software to format it from maxtor's website, it's very simple.
and $40 to format a drive is no "friend" discount.

Device manager doesn't recognize it at all? What about disk manager?
Right click on my computer and go to manage, then click on "disk manager" on the left. See if any drives show up that you don't recognize.
