would like to ask everyone's opinion about both radar detectors. Who has used which detector and how good they perform. I have personally seen escort 8500 perform and works great but dont know how beltronics 990 compare to it. Please help me decide which one to get. thanks!

At the risk of sounding cheap, I'm going to suggest the top-of-the-line Radio Shack detector. I have had one for years, and it is impressive. I always get a 1/4 mile or more warning, and it's more often than not triggered before I come around the corner, or over the hill, meaning I can detect the cop before he sees me.

Works as well as it can for laser, although there's really no advance warning for that. Instant on? Usually catch the reflections off of preceeding cars. And when the road is straight and flat the range is impressive at least.

v1 = 400.....my , and sins im guessing, radio shack POS that works well= 80

the way i look at it is.... why do i want the **** to beep when the cop is 5 miles away....give me a 1/2 mile warning and im happy because i have enough time to slow down or stop acting like an idiot....5 miles away i have to drive caustiously for the next 10 miles beceaus i have no clue where he really is

I had good luck with my Radio Shack detector until it kicked the bucket. I'll probably buy another one.

the reason i ask this question is that...

1) my 93 integra almost got stolen... and instead of stealing my car, they pretty much stripped the whole car, including my beltronics 936.

2) after a week without a radar detector, i just got a 186 dollar ticket on a 45mph road doing 68mph. VERY STUPID OF ME!

thanks for the opinions people. keep 'em coming

In a related question, how 'bout radar/laser jammers like http://www.technoscout.com/general/product...asp?product=224 and

http://www.4-spy-cameras-and-spy-equipment...m/radjamrm.html

And as long as we're going on about nifty-sounding gadgets, how about

http://www.cameragear.com/ec/EasyOilChange.htm

Is that a good idea?
