Here is the way I understand it:

'86:

Base - 4 lug wheels, little to no options

Sport - rubber aero attachments, 5 lug wheels

GXL - 5 lug wheels with 4 piston front calipers, leather as an option, usually had a sunroof, map pockets and nice trim on the door panels, Auto Adjusting Suspension, limited slip differential

87:

SE - same as base before

Sport - same as above

GXL - same as above

Turbo II - 4 piston front calipers, rear spoiler and aero mirrors, lots of options... A TURBO

88:

SE - same as above

GTU - Turbo-type rear spoiler and aero-mirrors; replaced the "Sport" package

GXL - same as above

Convertible - fully-optioned model with special BBS wheels, HEAVY due to lots of structural reinforcements

Turbo II - same as above

89:

All NA models get a power boost from 146HP to 160HP.

GTU - same as above, replaces the SE as the base model

GTUs - Turbo rear-diff with 4.30 final drive ratio, Turbo wheels, 4 piston brakes, no sunroof

GXL - same as above

Convertible - same as above

Turbo II - same as above, power up from 180HP to 200HP

1990:

All models unchanged, GTUs discontinued.

1991:

Coupe: same as GTU/GXL style, only with a multitude of options instead of a set package

Convertible: same as above

Turbo II: samve as above

there were officially no 91 GTU's made, however, there were in actuality, exactly 100 shipped from the factory, which makes the 91 GTU's one of the rarest rx7's around (I should have won a keychain for that, but someone else got a technicality, there was a 3rd gen that was a prototype, so only one was made )

Incorrect. You're thinking of the 1990 GTUs, of which only 100 were produced, even though Mazda claimed it had been discontinued. Didn't you check the website?

to sum it up, all 89+ GTU models are just base models, like the 86-88 SE models. The only real GTU is the 88'. Its got all the sport goodies but none of the weight.
