If you've paid attention to games being released over the last 3 years you'll note that they all weigh in at about 3gb or so you don't see many games getting over that mark. The reason for that is not a lack of capacity as it's easy to pack in several CD's or DVD's, but because there's no reason to put that much content on a CD. Sure you can shovelware them if you want and add every map and third party creation you can find but there's not much point in that either.
Morrowind is staggeringly huge and it's only 1.2gb. I suppose you could pack the rest in with higher rez textures but even that is not going to weigh down the disk that much. EQ is about 3.5gb with all it's expansions. Doom 3 is about 4gb unpacked. DS is huge, 1.5gb. Sony's pig of a game EQ 2 is only 4gb and it has great looking graphics and textures.
See my point?
Content costs money, lots and lots of money. I don't see it happening in the next several years.

You have a few years on me, so I'll concede you are probably a lot more wise.
I think the size of a particular game is not solely based on content, per se. Think about how much more rich and detailed the graphics can be simply because 1) the next-gen consoles can handle richer and more detailed graphics and 2) storage space is REQUIRED to bring that detail to a particular box. I'm not sure what the bitrate of 1080p video is, but it most certainly required more than what a standard DVD can support.
A 1080p game with DTS surround sound of the magnitude of GTA: San Andreas or GT4 cannot be delivered on a standard DVD.
I guess M$ is going to challenge that, unless they 360 does in fact support a next-gen standard of DVD.

They are advertising video streaming inside a game which would be cool and pretty weighty space wise. Pretty expensive too, I shudder to think at the cost of the next gen games.
Not sure how much they can jam onto a DVD with all the tricks of encoding and compression they can get away with. There's also just shipping on 2 DVD's as well.
Sony will have their hands full with MS this time around despite the fact that the PS3 is more powerful then the 360. Of course it's not the power it's what you do with it. One exception I do take is the people saying that the PS3 is next gen and the 360 is just like xbox 1.5. Well sure if you're compairing the PS2 to the PS3, PS2 graphics aren't that great, very jagged. The xbox on the other hand can produce great visuals as it sits so there's not quite the jump required.
I'll wait and see what happens, I'll pick up a 360 if I can affored it (HA!) and if the PS3 is solid I'll do that as well. I think we will see more in the way of next gen games on the 360 for the simple reason that PC developers will work on it where they don't generally care to touch other consoles.
