It's just rollers, bearings, and controls. Nothing really difficult for the DIY-er.

yeah man, they sell all **** over at ace hardware Portable motorcycle dyno bullshit site. How about controlling the load that the dyno exerts on the tire? and controls.... yeah DIY my *** you fool.

a cheap dyno will run you 40k, and that is not including : computer, software ($$$$) the rigging, and installation. if you have spent that much on dynoing, i suggest you send the motor to me and we'll engine dyno it.

in other words, not a smart idea if you are just going to tune people's cars by showing them what they gained by throwng an intake and exhaust on.

you will only need tuning when you port an engine, swap out turbo's, engine swaps, etc. major modifications done to the engine, not a intake and a catback.

he's not talking about tuning the peoples cars. He's talking about charging them a fee to get on the dyno just to know how much power they are making.

who the hell cares about the power you make off of a catback or an intake. i am just impressed with throttle response from those types of things.

i just think it is a silly investment because he is tired of paying for a PROFESSIONAL to tune his car for him.

i wish i had a car on my driveway that I send to be tuned.

this guy is just being a cheapskate in my eyes.

dyno's are very expensive. thing about what it takes to put one in. digging, floorplans, the rollers, the correct software, computers. you can't just throw one in your garage and open up a shop.

this thread has turned gay.

Who needs dyno's when you can use the pony brake system. This was the original sytem to calculate horspower, invented a good 100 years ago by some scientist/engine builder. Basically what you do is put together a series of cables and pulleys with mules (not a horse or pony) and have the mules pull on the cables which will then slow the crankshaft on the engine till it completly stops. Depending on the number of mules you use will determine how many horsepower you have. Price is fairly cheap this way too. Simply buy some sturdy cable, or find some guy wires from a power pole, and get some pulleys from the hardware store. Next you go to a farm and borrow mules, or you can buy your own mules if you have a farm or land with grass. Pony brake system....if you don't believe me read a book or look it up.

Because, obviously, you have speced, designed, tuned, and operated dynos.

I have, and they are really not that complicated. The ones I used to tune emissions are still dos-based.

Bearings and tubing are not hard to find. Controls are also generally easy. The only real issue is the rollers and the load, and a few hours of calculations and testing should get you pretty close. A scrap generator might be neat.. you could sell the electricity back to the grid, or a set of train brakes. A couple of calls to industrial supply houses, and equipment scrappers, and you could probably find all of the parts in an afternoon.

ok wow i didnt think this thread was goin to get quite this responce. the reason i want to get a dyno is ;

i want to tune my own car, i do not trust anyone else in my area nor with in a 250 mile radious of me except my boy down in chitown. also the hassel of trailering my car to a shop then them telling me they need X amount of money to do a base map then XXX more to tune and them also stating if my car blows they are not responcible for it. if she is goin to blow i wanna be the one who does it! atleast i can be there to watch the thing go up in smoke then learn for the mistakes i have made noone else just me. AND I AM NOT BEING A ***** WITH MY MONEY, IM BEING SMART ABOUT WHAT I SEE ONLY AROUND ME, I DO NOT HAVE THE OPTION OF A QUALITY SHOP IN MY AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

secondly i am not goin to tune anyones car but my own unless i feel comfortable with the machine and the car and the owner, cause lets face it your best freind can become your best enemy if you blow there 6000 dollar motor up and just say um sorry? hell even if its just a 300 buck junker he or she will still be pissed for life.

thirdy anytime you make a change in your car it to me is nice to know when and where the power curve is, hell im not sayin lets dyno a car if i go from a apexi exhaust to a hks, im talkin pipe diamiter to muffler length to header tube lenght or dp size and lenght to open dump or size of that to ic pipe changes to port changes to injector size to countless things that most of us just think off the shelf works best, but ever car is differnt , every tuner is differnt and i for one would like to know what works best on my car and others, cause just off the shelf parts dont do it for me.

and one more reason, i can count 50 differnt honda shitvic owners who want to dyno there cars after just a few bolt ons wich then i would do a few pulls at a price for them and they always want there **** done like that , trust me the lil rich kids round here are not of the brightest kidies around , why not capitalize on that. and there are more born everyday.

but the main reason i want to do this dyno thing is , i have a dream that i want to fullfill and with a dyno im one step closer to my dream , and what may i ask is wrong with having a dream and trying to fullfill them, nothing i say but at the same time you need to know just your limits in fullfilling them dreams and this is the reason i am only pondering the dyno buy at the whopping coast of 59000 dollars shipped to my home from dynapac usa, yes they responded to me quite well.
