Do you have to pay upfront or pay when you are 'awarded'?
you need a lawyer, there are fees to do a search if the patent exists, then
fees to apply, then fees to keep the patent going
I did a modification on a swimplatorm for a boat for which the owner
was applying for a patent, he never told me what it was but he told me
what he was going thru. I only modified the part of the boat, I didnt
see what he was mounting there

And be careful with those "invention submission" companies. The one I looked into wanted like $1,500 up front, and that was before they even checked to see if a patent already existed for this item.

Unless you are a big company or are fairly rich getting a patent is a waste of time. Even if you are awarded a patent as soon as manufactures find out about it they will try and reproduce something like it, and if you don't want them to then you have to take them to court and show that it is too similar. Which costs mucho denero. And you still have to watch out for all the other companies. Too much work for what it's worth if you aren't rich.
