15? 16? 17? 18?, the diameter plays a role as well as the tire, some drag radials can be up to 255 and still go nicely on the stock fd rim. I have 245 on my stock rims and yes for street tires the sidewalls wont let ya get bigger than that at 16" x 8"
edit: but i do think that 7" will be to small for 255

The tires are 255/50/16
The problem is its the only drag radial I can find that will fit a 16 inch rim and they happen to be 255's.
Though, on that same note my friends with muscle cars manage to stick 285's on rims taht arent much wider than mine.

it is all in the side walls
drag radials have a softer sidewall which does allow them to go on a smaller rim
for a definite answer I would contact the manufacturer of that particular tire, there may even be a chart online of size ranges, bridgestone does that I believe.
