dude what are you talking about ...they have to have pistons or else it couldnt move...
you should have one upped him and just said..... "woah, how can your engine work by having things move up and down, they cant move unless theres a spinning rotor in an oval.."
and then shoulda been like "yea i took out my cams and ****"

technically speaking, the rotary engine has pistons.

wouldnt you say the rotor has a thrusting motion, it's simply continuously thrusting in a rotary motion.
