New Camera

I actually work in the digital imaging department of best buy. I agree that nikon make one of the best camera's but I then canon has them beat. the digital rebel, 10d, elan7 digital. And all the a series (a60,a70a and a80) cams are top sellers and comsumer reports favorites.

The N75 will probably be a good camera.
Out of curiosity why didn't you get her a digital camera? Does she prefer film?
I agree that film will never die, but I think it is dropping out of the mainstream very quickly. I don't think too many professional photographers still use film as their primary medium. Most of the pro-photographers I know use digital almost exclusively, with maybe a medium, or 35mm backup. Rowtareh, I've got a 35mm Minolta that's older than me too (SRT-201), fully manual. I've got so many lenses and accessories that it isn't cost effective to go to a modern 35mm camera and have to start over. So we bought a nice digital last month and haven't looked back. It still alows us the flexibility, and creativity we want with the picture, but with instant gratification.
I've held the new Nikon D70, which goes up against the digital Rebel, and it's very nice. The autofocus is crazy fast. And it has very good balance with the small zoom lense it had on it. I've also held Kodaks new top-of-the-line 14MP (that's right fourteen)... and it is the least ergonomic body I've ever seen. I think the designers at Kodak all have cloven hooves instead of hands. That thing is so awkward.
With so many sources (snapfish, et al) for getting digital prints it's very easy to let the 35mm collect dust. And if you do the math, at some point the digital camera will be cheaper because of the savings in film developing. 300 pictures taken doesn't necessarily mean 300 pictures developed/printed.
Anyway, I hope your mom likes the camera, rx7girltk.

Cool. I think people get caught up in the hype and buy way more digital camera than they need. We paid $320 for ours and we love it. I've talked about it recently on this forum. Search for Minolta, if you're interested.

I really like the new Kodak, but you are right, it is a monstrosity to hold.
I personally like the new Canon Rebel Digital. The D70 does not really impress me too much. Same specs as the canon, but no lense. You can get the Canon D Rebel for 1000 bucks and a decent lense.
Haha. I have a hand gun case full of camera ****. 4 35 mm cameras, and two digitals. I would like to add a medium format camera to that collection. But I can not steer away from my digital. It is very low megapixels, but one hell of an awesome zoom. Compares to a 1000mm zoom lense. Awesome!

Nikon just released the D70 with the zoom lense as a package. According to nikonusa.com it's a 18-70mm.
I also have a Minolta SR-1 from ~1960. There isn't even a light meter in it. I ruined lots of pictures with that.
