I've had HP, that thing just got old, and slow. It was a 1.3ghz processor, with only 128mb ddram.
I know have an emachine with a 2.6ghz processor, and 256mb ram. Yeah, it is an emachine, but I bought the thing for 50 bucks from my old job, and all it needed was the fan to be replaced. That's a deal in my book!!!
EDIT: Yes, dell rocks. My folks have 3 dell laptops from work, and they rock hard!! The warranty kicks ***, and they are BLAZING fast. We have one that is about 6 years old, still works great, just really outdated.

pentium m 1.6 ghz? thats pretty slow. i wouldnt try to do any video stuff with that. especially with only 32 mb of video memory.
if you can cancel that you should. and if you dont need it to be a laptop you should just order the parts and put it together yourself. i built one that is very nice for about $900, and a lot of the things i put in it were specifically chosen for heavy 3d/cad purposes so you probably wouldnt need as good of stuff as i did. it was the only computer ive ever built and its really pretty simple. you just have to basically bolt it all together and plug it in. after that you just have to load windows and youre good to go.
i would recommend building to anyone who wants a new computer. i could build you a really nice computer for about 500 or 600 bucks. not that im trying to get you guys to let me build one for you, but i wouldnt mind recommending parts and a source and telling you how to put it together

I'm not going to build one. I've dealt with too many idiots, and too much bullshit working through problems, I don't want to load anything, I just want to plug the **** in and have it do what I tell it to do.
We still have our Vaio desktop, our friend worked out the bugs for it. If we need more power (it's several years old), I'll just upgrade that one. But for now, I really need a working computer for school. I'm starting back in August.
