where is the relay machine gun sound coming from? under the dash? under the hood?

In that vehicle if you turn the key to the on position, then off three times in a row the CEL light will flash any diagnostic codes. See if there are any codes and post them here. It's just like a mazda withe the long flash short flash sequence to get the 2 digit code
So turn in on/off 3 times? Do I leave it ON to read the codes? Thanks!

The CEL light is storing a code, that is why it is blinking.
The light flutters with the strange sounds. Kind of like it's trying to prime or avtivate something...

Normally, with the key in the on position, the light will be on as soon as the key is turned up.. No waiting. Now, it almost seems to "struggle" doing whatever necessary to prep the car to start.. Very odd..

Sequence is as follows:

turn key on to on position to see dash lights, turn off

repeat

repeat and leave on, wait 3-5 seconds and CEL will flash codes, ussually seperated by a pause of 1 second between numbers

flash flash flash....flash flash flash flash = Code 34

sometimes they repeat 3x then there is a 1-3 second pause and if there are any other codes they will begin.

write down all, there will be at least one code, ussually an all systems are fine code (code 12 or code 55) not sure so do not quote me

Wish I could help more, Diagnostics over the internet is hard, without being right there its hard to say exactly what it is. But we'll at least get you pointed in the right direction.

Maybe the engine harness is bad? Mercedes had problems with cheap harnessesin the early-mid 90's. The insulation deteriorates and **** starts shorting out intermittently. It can cause alot of wierd problems.

Just an idea......
