the IM software you are thinking of is Trillian, it is rather sexy, and if you have an Nvidia video card, just download their new drivers with Nview, it supports transperant windows with Hardware accelleration, Btw, trillian natively supports transperancy.

Edit: I use Redhat 7.3, I like it, if you are into customized desktops, this is the way to go IMO.
