Someone open up a Microtech to see if there are any numbers "sanded" off the prosessor.

I dont see why they would risk the reputation of the company by doing that. But nowadays you never know.

you said it yourself, "Mhz processor that runs a 16Mhz crystal which divides down to a 4 Mhz bus" its a 16mhz crystal, they can claim it to run at 16mhz since it does. its just cut downt by the bus speed. if you read on megasquirts website they say "microcontroller operating at an internal bus speed of 8 Megahertz (this is bus speed - remember that most microprocessors spec their parts at external crystal speed, which is then divided down by four to yield internal bus speed). Many OEM and popular aftermarket EFI systems use older processor technology (like the MC68HC11 or Z80) which operate at 1 or 2 Mhz internal bus speed. The faster clock speed, coupled with direct assembly-language programming, gives MegaSquirt its power."

its all marketing, as long as somewhere in the chips specs it says 16mhz then you will not get anywhere with a lawsuit.

well, accd. to the posted mtech also claims it is 16 bit while the poster claims it is 8 bit.

I'd say that having registers half the advertised size might make a difference!

They've been doing this for a while.

The other guys who do this is Autronic.

They might've stopped doing this now, but back in 1999 both companies grinded all the major IC ID numbers.
