My mom used to have an 80's 300E a long time ago, then bought a 300CE (like a 300E but 2 door with bigger engine). Both were auto and had very bad responce time. You would floor it and get nothing for about 3 seconds. She bought a new A4 and wow, that thing just takes off when you hit the gas, and it's an auto.

mercedes manuals are shitty?
Most reviews I have heard say that the 6 speed found in newer Benzes (available on all non AMG C-Class and SLK-Class cars) are supposed to be more precise and easier to shift than the BMW E46 M3's 6-speed. I haven't heard of any of the older ones though. Current Benz automatics are supposed to be very responsive and always in the best gear for what ever acceleration and cruising you are doing. I love Mercedes-Benz, so I am a little bit of an elitist.

And all 190E's were available in both auto and 5-speed manual except the 2.5L diesel motor.

They put mercedes 6-speed's into the 05 and 06 liberty and wranglers. I don't know what they came from though.

the 190 automatic is retarded. it starts in second gear, and then 4th isnt an over drive so it turns a lot of rpms on the freeway. why have a 1st gear if its just for decoration? if you floor it it will downshift into 1st, but its a 3 second wait. i dunno.

the 71 starts in first, and if you give it gas, smokes the right rear tire all thru first, and then into second.

I got a 300CE, and like j9 just said it has a second gear start (USA only). If i know im gonna launch from a light, put the selector into 1st, then back into drive. It launches hard from first, sometimes chirp second. It moves pretty well for a heavy car.

Yeah, they've got the power if you don't let it shift.

No, you let it shift normal.

You just make it start in first, instead of second. You can put it in drive while stopped at the lights and it still stays in first.
