idle stop systems save fuel by shutting down a vehicle's engine automatically when the car is stationary and restarting it when the driver resumes driving. Especially in urban areas, drivers often let their car's engine idle at traffic lights or when stopped in traffic jams. Switching off the engine to stop it idling in these situations enhances fuel economy by about 10% under Japan's 10-15 mode tests*1.

meh shut it down to one-cylinde ror something, dont stop all the motion, plus doesnt it use more gas to fire up the engine then to idle it?

It doesn't for a diesel though....and somehow back in the 90's that pertained to a gas engine somehow. However the prius/insight both have systems that shut off the motor whilst sitting still..additionally so you dont hear it turning back on (for the insight at least) they send a conterracting sound through the sound system which makes starting the motor have no sound at all!
