They just have given up saying the RX-8 gets decent mileage so they went "Well the tall gearing scheme didn't work, let's just make it accelerate like it always should have". Plus at this point I think all efforts are going into whatever the 16x will sit in.

Rotary Engine That's the Mazda site's rotary engine page. More Making Of videos as well as a presentation on the 16x and other stuff.

speaking of the 16x i've heard rumblings of an extended miata platform, without ford locking them down however all bets are off, but ive been hearing about some type of modified miata platform for a while and the whispers keep getting louder. The final nail in the coffin to me was the intro of the 16x, then the announcement that it will essentially never be in the rx8 (not said directly, but eluded to).

I have a dvd with interviews of mazda design and drivetrain engineers saying the reason they would never put a rotary into a roadster(miata) type platform is that the RE was to powerful to be safe for the type of people that like to buy the roadster. They felt the chassis would be overcome and unbalanced with a 250hp+ rotary. the host then asks them why they don't upgrade the chassis, they then answered its not an RX model.

I always thought that would have been a great home for the renesis myself.

if you look on youtube, there is an english company that has put the rx8 engine in the mx5 (i think it literally is a bolt in too, although wiring looks fun )

seems like rx8 engine in a miata is perfect!
