not sure I'm asking for someone else. I do know they have a dsl modem. but I'm not sure if that box is in a network

If the network is properly configed then at the prompt he should type: /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start

If she using KDE desktop there should be a network configurator and a gui to start NIC, I am not familiar with that flavour of linux, it may store the init's in a different spot I dunno.

ok she got it connected in root. but when she trys to access the internet it says its not connected
