Are you on a network or a modem or what?

not sure I'm asking for someone else. I do know they have a dsl modem. but I'm not sure if that box is in a network

If the network is properly configed then at the prompt he should type: /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start

I just loaded up Mandrake!!! It's pretty cool so far. Am I cool now? lol

It said no such file or dir found.

she useing kde knppix a linux based cd

she also says, she cant cant go in root.

If she using KDE desktop there should be a network configurator and a gui to start NIC, I am not familiar with that flavour of linux, it may store the init's in a different spot I dunno.

ok she got it connected in root. but when she trys to access the internet it says its not connected
