Yeah if you dont need a portable computer, dont get a laptop...
1. You can buy "twice" as much desktop for the same price, including printer.
2. The upgrade path for a laptop is usually a)nonexistant or b)flippin expensive
3. No one ever jacked my old *** 386...portability can also mean jackability.

In my experience with computers, do not try to do much gaming with a laptop. It is cumbersome and does not work well for gaming. Desktops are much better for that.
You have been given some great advice here. I would only get a laptop if you need portability like taking it to class or to the library or whatever.
I would stick with a desktop if you do not need the portability.

well, thats the thing.... dorm room = small. so I don't really want a desktop set up and taking up more space.
and the campus has wireless internet in any public student place (cafeteria, student union, library, gym, and more) so a laptop would be nice for that.
and I don't know how many of my classes will require one...

I know dorms don't have much space, but your tower will hardly take much space from where your feet go under a desk or something...you can get flat panel monitors now so there's not much else to it...

It's so rediculous. I just finished my 2 years in business, you do NOT need a laptop to take notes. And it gets worse with science/math notes...how you going to write all that out on your laptop all that efficiently, especially once you have to start drawing things and formula's and junk?
Stop being a loser and get the desktop....or burn your *****...the choice is yours my friend.

If you're looking for a gaming laptop, get the Dell Inspiron XPS, has set 99% of the benchmarks for speed and graphics capabilities for laptops, I have a Dimension XPS and have never had any problems, the only problem with the xps is they can be a little pricey...

A. I take notes on laptop2 for lecture classes. B. I take notes on laptop3 for math/science classes. Never had a problem.
I have a newer Vaio. The first one I bought broke 6 times in the waranty. I had the cd drive replaced 5 times, the lcd screen replaced once, the keyboard replaced twice, and the hard drive replaced twice. It broke again out of waranty and I bitch to sony for a month during school, and finally got a brand new one for free. I haven't had a problem with the new one. When it comes to Sony you either get a good one or a bad one.
My second laptop is a 1995 Toshiba Satellite, I use this for lecture notes, never had a problem. Also use it for tuning.
Third laptop is actually a Tablet Pc: Fujitsu Point 510. I use it for math/science notes, never had a problem.
The two cheap laptops I bought for under a hundred each. I highly doubt you will ever use your laptop in an wireless ethernet environment, just because all you can do is go on to the internet and waste battery life. I have never gotten laughed at for using my laptop in class, in fact quite a few people have asked me for notes from classes they missed, because they are neat and legibal. Plus you charge them five bucks for a semester's worth of notes and people will start lining up. I doubt you will have a class that requires a laptop, if you do, they will most likely provide it for you. Or most campuses have rental laptops for that purpose.

i just graduated from school 8 months ago. lived on campus for 4 years.
in classes with 300 + kids, maybe 1 or 2 had laptops. they are really useless for class.. it sucks taking notes on laptops because you can't draw what you need to draw, a pad of paper and pen work best. especially when your doing math.
i lived in a small dorm my first year, and a desktop won't take up any more space than a laptop.. put the tower under the desk, get a flat panel screen, wireless mouse and keyboard, and anything can be stored if space is your issue.
it sounds like you are one of those pumped up freshman who wants the best of the best laptops to carry and take to class, but in reality, you will regret it..
iv'e fixed a lot of laptops on campus, and they are a pain in the ***.. desktops on the other hand are a hell of a lot easier
