for the emergency situations, aren't there seatbelt cutters you can buy, like built into the handle of those little hammers that are for smashing your windows? they're like a little blade, set back in a plastic hook...does anyone know what I mean?

Yes, but would be fend off an attacker w/ a bright orange yellow hammer? If that is all I had, yes I would,...BUT a knife is more versatile in some situations.



I can also use the knife on a camping trip, etc.

I've thought about carrying a knife for protection purposes, but if it's over 3" (I think, in FL) it can't be conceiled. I'm afraid I'd get arrested after I get pulled over and searched, and it happened to slip under the seat. That would be my luck.
