Ok well keep in mind that is only half of the anemometer, the other half I already own and have installed, so it was cheaper and much easier then going with a lower quality method, installing and hoping it works half as good as the expensive one i have now.
Ok that said, let's talk about licking your finger and holding it up. Imagine you are sitting on your bike stopped at a light you hold your finger up and the wind is coming at your right side, cool you know the True Wind is 90 degrees to you, now the light turns green and you start moving forward, you again hold up your licked finger and gee, the Apparent Wind is dead ahead, why? because you are moving forward, you now have no idea what the true wind is. We can all agree the wind changes throughout the day, let's imagine having to bring your boat to a complete stop, lick your finger and check the True Wind direction everytime it changes.... so there ya go. True Wind is the actual direction of the wind Apparent Wind is the experienced by a moving object, in short true wind fills your sails, apparent wind does not.

here's a tricky question then.
how do these analmeters measure true wind while the boat is moving? are they like hovercrafts or something?
kevin.

i dont know how analmeters measure it, but anemometers measure by being tied into the gps, so it knows your true heading and speed COG and SOG

oh so it uses an equation factoring in its known speed and direction and subtracting that from its readings to leave only the true wind speed left.
kevin.

thats how the **** one works too, wind speed, it also works on politicians, although you should wash it
