I normally don't read books for fun, but I need something to keep my brain occupied during my lonely lunch hours. I don't know good authors or series, I'm about out of the loop as it gets with literature.

Requirements:

nothing political

not too many characters (I can't keep track of them, normally I have to mark the pages where each character is introduced to refer back to later)

not extremely lengthy (I forget what happened earlier by the time I get to the end)

fiction or non-fiction, I like either.

Start a lunch time fight club at the office.

Try the "Prey" series by John Sandford. Minneapoulis homicide cops solving crimes and battling evildoers. Added bonus that it's the same group of cops in each book, so you get to know them and shouldn't need to refer back to the character introduction like you mentioned.

Oh yeah, start with the older ones if you can. They do sometimes make small references to old incidents as they go along, so that can be a little confusing.

The Golden Age of ********. Good read!

Actually, a book I've always liked was Tony Hawk's Autobiography, not very long, but it was a good read. I read it twice, so it is good.

The classical Greek comedies make good light reading. Anything by Aristophanes is a riot--Lysistrata, for example.

If you're interested in pure humor, the "Evil Dead" movies, or World War II: The Alphabet of Manliness by Maddox, If Chins Could Kill by Bruce Campbell, and My Tank is Fight! by Zack Parsons. Those are 3 recent reads of mine that were incredibly satisfying.
