Dunno might have too many characters, I just finished 3 or 4 books, but most of them werent good enough to recommend.

read most of that on the plane coming back from europe, and it was good, but it was tiring!

Try the "Prey" series by John Sandford. Minneapoulis homicide cops solving crimes and battling evildoers. Added bonus that it's the same group of cops in each book, so you get to know them and shouldn't need to refer back to the character introduction like you mentioned.
I like "The Empress File"! Time to find another book.
