i just picked up a 1991 mazda rx7 coupe

From what I've been told the trany smells like burnt fluid because the fluid will get into the rear housing and build up. This happens everytime you shift because of the seals on the 3 shifter rods. You shift and move a rod and the seals allow fluid in. when you finish the seals do thier job. They seal and don't let the fluid back into the gear box. over time the fluid builds up and overflows through the hole for your shifter. Once it overflows it gets burnt on the tranny housing and produces the nasty burnt fluid smell. The way to fix is to remove all but one of the seals on all the rods. this will allow the fluid to get back into the gear box.

you can also cut a notch the whole length of the shaft. this one smells because all the shifter boots are bad, you can see the ground, and the guts of the shifter
