I'm going to be buying a new car. Like, very very soon, perhaps today. I know there's ways to talk down the price, but I've never bought a new car before. Any tips?

Why a new car? Go for 1 year used. You'll take a huge hit and be upside down as soon as you buy a new one. At least with an '05 you get the remainder of the warranty and the car is already devalued significantly.

We want the Mazda 5, hard to find an '05 here (were there any '05 models?), especially the one we want. We'll be trading in 2 cars, and putting something like $5k down.

there was no 05 mazda 5. there is an 06 mazda 6 though....

um i dunno about buying a new car, but ideally you should know what you want to pay for it (invoice, sticker, rebates etc), and go from there. if you're reasonable, you'll have a new car

where they trick you is in the financing dept anyways.

I never buy brand new cars. Devalue kills me. I buy slightly used...maybe 15k to 30k miles at the most.

be blunt about it...say...I can spend this(whatever amount off the car that you want) if they go for it...cool...if not..oh well. Remember, you don't need the car, but the salesman NEEDS to sell it to you.

Yeah. Gotta remember that you own the salesman.. not the other way around. You're the one with the cash.

If the salesman disappears in the back more than once, tell him to quit ******* around and bring mr goldfingers out of the back office. If the salesperson you're working with can't get you a number right there at the desk, you don't want to waste your time with that person, get the guy that can throw out the numbers on the spot.

Do not hesitate to be rude and obnoxious, if you begin to feel uncomfortable, throw it back at them, always hold out for more.

If they do not budge, head for the door, depending on the situation they may not let you make it to the door, other times you might get all the way to the car, have it started, or even call up to a week later before they come and try to get you back in the sales office, just remember, like others have said, they have to sell the car, you don't have to buy it.

Save the fact that you will not be using thier financing until right at the end, assuming the deal is going your way. Keep grinding away at that msrp/invoice price, they have room to move, trust me.

Edit: I almost forgot to add, do it at a time you can spend any amount of time on the deal, if you are in a hurry chances are you'll get taken to the cleaners
