Handguns...
First thing... You're doing the best thing... go to the shooting range and shoot the **** out of the pistols you want to buy. All of the ones you're considering, but be honest with yourself as to how each one feels in your hand while shooting.
I've owned several handguns over the years and I'll give you my 'opinion' on each:
Sig P226 - 9mm - Great, simple to use, accurate as hell and reliable. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it.
Glock 19 - 9mm - Another superb pistol. Reliable if you don't limp wrist it. But not for everyone. To me one of the best all around pistols. Great $ value.
Glock 23 - .40 - same as above more of a snap when you shoot. Follow up shots a bit slower but still quick. Advantage you can but in a QUALITY barell replacement and make it shoot a 9mm
HK USP - .40 - Same shat as the sig. More snap like the Glock 23 but bulky as hell
HK P7M8 - 9mm - loved this pistol... shoots accurate as hell. 3 problems 1. Expensive 2. Gets very hot when shot alot 3. didn't fit my hand well, moved when I shot it, others found it to fit properly, my bad luck.
1911 - .45 - My personal favorite. I like the feel and fits my hand well. It shoots accurately and quickly for me. Heavy, only 8 rounds in magazine, need some decent training to operate well, expensive (for a good one).
Being pistols... they're all pretty weak. Get the caliber and pistol that works best for you.

Don't get a handgun, learn self defense on some really cool weapon. Martial arts are the shizzle.
.44 mag is a nice powerful gun but not something good for home defense. The problem is the bullet hits the person and then goes through the wall looking for something else to obliterate.
Walthers are very nice, just very costly.
Honestly if I could get a handgun for defense and cost and legality were not an object I would get a Five seveN. That's spelled correctly. Nice round, good punch, very light and not much carry. Perfect for killing people stupid enough to break in.
Also not easy to obtain and of questionable legality.

wow .. a FN - definately one of my favourite personal weapons. I don't believe its legal in any state however, due to the 5.56NATO it shoots, besides the fact that its pretty god damn lethal against armoured targets
not too many people are aware of those
FN is gorgeous.
W/r/t to sidearms though, if you are really going to use it for target *only*
look for one that has enough KE blow force to destroy any target you would be targetting, and one that is comfortable enough for you to wield at long intervals and high volume shooting.
Realize, that whatever you decide on, that you will have to come to love the weapon, and have it become part of you, if you are wanting for target comp
