I read somewhere that one of the old Benz slushboxes was acknowledged to be THE most reliable automatic ever made. And look at the old GM TH350 and TH400 trannies. Those things would routinely outlast the cars they were installed in. It's only since the "redesign" (read "planned obsolescence") of automatic transmissions since the 1980's that autotrans trouble has become commonplace.

Mercedes trannies are apparently "Liftetime Lubricated" now.
It's just that the service manual says to replace the transmission at 100,000 kms

the service book for my 71 300sel had you changing the starter, alternator and suspension air bags every 50,000miles. seriously

mercedes is really bad at manual transmissions, they like a granny gear first, and its clunky. my brothers 63 220s 4 speed on the column was kinda neat though
the auto trans is based on some chrysler thing, its OLD, but in the small sample size i haven't even heard of a bad one. it actually looks like the 2 w123's left in the group are going to outlast the owners

its all the electronic bullshit in modern transmissions that makes them bad..
simple 3 speed automatics were great until they started wanting smoother transmissions and more speeds, I used to have TH350 transmissions modified to handle high horsepower and torque and they still cost nothing to do. Things would break your neck when they shifted that how crisp they were.
