alright gang,

I recently got a speeding ticket for doing 74 in a 50. It was on the pallisades parkway and the traffic was almost non-existing. it was me and 3 other cars... We were all going the same speed, I was in the left lane behind one other car, while the other two were in the right. The cop caught me via radar... and the conversation went as usual...

cop: What's the rush?

me: no rush.

cop: do you know you were speeding?

me: no, I was just following everyone else.

cop: license and registration

me: ok..

cop: come back with the ticket (forgets my license and resigration in his car)

me: can I have all my documents back

cop: oh... (goes gets it and then comes back)

cop: you have to slow down... blah blah

so my question is, aside from getting a lawyer because it's already a given, what else is there that I can do so that I can protect my record! I already have 5 points on it cus I was stupid enough not to go to court for another speeding offense I had....

I was thinking of saying I had a radar jammer in my car, but I don't know if that's going to open up another can of worms...
*gasp*

I got a speeding ticket, I MUST get a lawyer

*gasp*

Ummm.. WHY? Why can't you just pay your fine, know and ADMIT you were speeding and get on with life? What is the big freaking deal?

Oh, and take the traffic school ... (you can go online or in the class). It'll take points off your record.

Geezz... stupid

(Sorry, don't mean to call you stupid, but I DID say above that if you pay the fine, go to traffic school (which also reduces the fine) it'll take points off your lisence)

You pay for the ticket, you go to TRAFFIC SCHOOL, badda bang, it's off your record. If you take the course - your points are OFF YOUR license.

Why don't you people quit hiding from your faults, and just pay the fine, take the traffic school, and get over yourselves? Honestly, call my a bitch, I could care less - but really. It's stupid to hide from your faults..... and try to go around the law system because you don't want to pay for it, or what not.

I agree with christi, assuming the laws are the same in other states as in Florida.

Even if not...

still, if you go to traffic school or anything to take a schooling for your fault in misbehaving while driving - you get points off your license, unless your state's laws are really screwed

Just trying to help.

umm ok.

a) he said he has 5 points

b) you are wrong.

If he simply pays the fine and accepts the points they go onto his record, depending on state regulations he will then be put on driver's probation, unless he's already on it (if he is in NJ he should already be on it).

Assuming he's already on it, he will lose his license for more then a year, and have to retake the course.

plus its always best to avoid points, once you hit 12 in some states you are no longer able to get a license, ever.

oh and to go ON topic.

Check the ticket, unless he stamped/circled/checked that he used a radar, you can simply say how could he know your speed without using one.

I know plenty of friends who got clocked on radar and the cop didn't say on the ticket he caught them on radar, so they went to court, asked how a cop could figure out an exact speed without a radar and walked out without paying a dime.

YOU ARE NOT UNDERSTANDING OTHER STATE'S LAWS.

AROUND HERE ONCE YOU REACH 4 POINTS:

1) YOU GET ENOUGH POINTS TO GET PROBATIONARY DRIVING

2) GO TO DRIVER'S COURSE

3) POINTS STAY ON TECHNICALLY UNTIL 1 YEAR PROBATION IS OVER

HE ALREADY HAS 5 DAMN POINTS, SO AROUND HERE HE'D BE ON DRIVING PROBATION ALREADY THEREFORE:

1) GET ANY ******* POINTS AND YOU LOSE YOUR LICENSE.

2) FORCED TO RETAKE THE DAMN DRIVING COURSE

OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE BEING HYPOCRITICAL AND NOT READING IT YOURSELF.

sorry to be blunt but you got into name calling for no reason and caps using.

LMFAO! Christi, there are these specil little things called 'state laws', and further, 'local laws'. Federal law usually yeilds to state law, and provisions in state law usually allow precedence to local law. Just because in sunny Florida you have certain traffic laws, which may or may not be specific to your locale, that are not necessarily similar to other reigons. I know in Lakewood, CO, where I live, you get busted for 68 in a 45 and the court will send you a plea bargain - in the mail - for an unsafe lane change. Lower points (if any), but the fine stays the same. It's nice becuase the county still gets the money and saves even more money by giving a huge incentive for offenders not to go to court, while giving you less headache and less points (if any). As for the points, 16-18 years are probationary licenses, 18-21 yrs old you get 10 points per year, and 21+ get 15 points per year. exceed your points for any given year, you get a discretionary suspension, from 30 days to a year.
