Work hard, get promoted, succeed in your new post, and eventually you'll start earning the big money. This progression seems like a firmly ingrained part of the American Dream, and it's certainly worked for a lot of people.

ha ha, ok I think the reality is more like, work hard, succeed in your new post, eventually you will realize your paycheck doesn't buy near what it used to, you'd like to retire, but that's impossible so you die on the job at 60 because you didn't have enough time to eat right and exercise while you were pulling your 50 hour works weeks. Oh and work in a home repo in there somewhere too

The "American Dream" is in fact just that, a dream. Look behind the shine, it doesn't always gleam..... The dream is a tool to keep us docile and enslaved, something we work hard for, hope for and then, then by the time we realize it aint gonna happen we've got no savings, lots of bills and no time to figure out an alternative. Citing a few successes is IMO the "Amway" style of marketing. Oh look joe blow is an american success story, he bought his first sandwich shop in 63 and now has 500 of them, they fail to mention the other 2000 sandwich shops that lost their owner his life savings. You would be VERY hard pressed to find anyone in the top 1% of wealth that actually "earned" their money. Even Bill Gates came from a wealthy family, certainly not as rich as his now, but rich enough that mom could get him some serious venture capital when he started up. You know what those same people would have said to me in 1980 if I asked them for money to start some whacky computer company and told them every household in america will have one of these personal computers? It would have went something like this; Who the **** are you? Why would I give you money?
