Well I am from Mississippi and based on my experiences with rednecks and people with confederate flags, I think it is a racist thing. The people that I know that have them still believe the South will rise again and openly hate non-white people. My roomate at a hick community college in the middle of bumfuck Mississippi put a huge Confederate flag up in our room. He would constantly express hate for African-Americans and would constantly salute the flag. This may not be true for all people with a Confederate flag but in my experiences it always has been for racist reasons. Just my $0.02.

The "reversed swastika" is called the manji, and it's a symbol for buddhist temples. In a bit of trivia, the NES game, The Legend of Zelda, had a dungeon in it (called the Manji Labyrinth) that caused an uproar because everyone thought that it was a subliminal message created by Nintendo to support the *****. This symbol was, in fact, the manji associated with buddhism. As for the rebel flag, most who fly it are racist, if I flew it, it wouldn't be for racial reasons.

Too many of you cocky northerners (southerners use the term "Yankees") think the south is full of hicks. Sure, we've got our share, but I've lived in Jersey too, and they've got plenty of 'em. Pennsylvania? Loaded with hicks. Ohio? Oh, please! The South is full of expensive homes and good schools and most of the people are pretty decent. Don't mistake a slightly less intense lifestyle for stupidity.

havent spent much time in the south, but pennsylvania is the most redneck place ive ever been, and its a BIG state!

I am a southener. I hate the people who fly the flag for a racist reason, its stupid to me. I do not have a flag, but i see it as a I'm proud to be a southener. Most people wouldnt understand that.

As far as the people who fly it for racial reason, makes it hard for those who do it for heritage reasons. And I do not know anyone who still thinks the south will rise again, thats silly. Even though i know some back woods people may.

So anyhow, now that i live in the southeast I definetely notice a little more "racial tension" so to speak that I wasn't really exposed to in Washington State. Anyhow, I saw two cars today with confederate flag stickers on them and I got to thinking, isn't that pretty racist? I meant the confeteracy faught to keep the slaves from being freed, doesn't it seem a bit like a step backwards to be waiving the confederate flag or is there something I am missing here?
I agree!! My dad moved to North Carolina I went and visited him and their were rebel flags all over...

Backwood people yelling about how the south will rise again blah! blah! blah!

I guess sence I'm from Oregon I'm not used to all that......

I'm from Alabama. I spent a good portion of my life on a mountain that few people of any color beside white visit even today. The KKK still take up money at some 4 way stops up there. It's way backwoods. It's kinda sickning to me. I was raised better than that. For me, I'd never fly one or own one even though I'm very proud of being from the south. My reasoning for not owning one is that I do not want to give the appearance of being racist. A lot of people see it that way. Some don't but a lot do. I really think it's crazy. Of course I think the civil war reinactments are crazy too but they are all over in north alabama.

I do agree with it whoever said about being a southern gentalmen and all. That's one of the biggest things that my parents taught me. To this day I will not sit anywhere in public if I see a woman having to stand. My mom always told me when I was little that a man shouldn't do that. It kills me to see guys doing it but that's just how I was raised. Being from such a small town, we were taught to be polite to everyone and your family name actually meant something. I remember a 1000 times being told not to disrespect my family name. I guess that's the biggest thing about what being from the south is all about to me. I really respect the jap's because they take the whole family thing to the next level, or at least they use too. I'm sure up north places are like that but that's just what I enjoy about being from the south. In highschool I saw guns in gun racks, houses never locked, keys left in the ignitions (with the guns in view), etc. It has it's good points but with the kkk and all it definately has it's bad points too. I think there are racists on both sides. I think most should be shot but that's another topic too. Anyway I'll stop rambling... I do not think the south will rise again but I will teach my kids to hold themselves to a higher standard and be gentlemen.

I a from wisconsin originally and I was taught to be agental man and to respect my family name. I think that is just a common respect for your fellow man thing that certain familys choose to teach their children no matter where you grow up or what race. I am white and had a very similar childhood values and teachings and my black and hispanic friends.

As for the whole flag and southern pride issue. I was taught and belive that the war was fought over a main ideal that was not slavery. The north wanted a national governing body that was superior to the state goverment. Where as the south wanted to have to states laws to be higher than that of the fedral goverment. Where the federal law was as least imposing on the statehoods desire to run itself. ie the hierachy of things was to pposite we have today. I know people in wisconsin that suported the southern ideals of goverment and economics.

As for fighting over slavery that is total bs becouse the industrial revoloution was starting to make it cheaper to run equipment than it was to house and feed slaves.

The flag to many is a symbol of the state choosing to govern itself in the manner inwhich is best suited for the state with out the federal goverment being able to have much say over that states laws.

VERY INTERESTING NEWS MEDIA ABOUT THE MEANING OF THE FLAG

I think the gentalman thing is more small town america. I live in the city now and it is wierd because everybody is out for themselves. Women doen't act like a ladies should and men don't act the way gentlemen should. Completely different than how I was raised. I can remember seeing men standing in Church because there were not enough seats for everybody but I never saw a woman stand. That doens't happen anymore, even though it should. That's what I liked about the small town I was from, most everybody was dirt poor but proud of what they stood for and where they came from. We had some freaks, like the kkk idiots but they all hid behind masks.... Everywhere has its good and bad but I was very proud to be from my town. I just wish all the racial stuff would end but it probably never will. Even the Romans had slaves and they were supposed to be the best. All we can do is try to improve in the future.

I grew up around it and i don't really care. Let them have their confederate flag, none of them even know what it means anyways. Half of the ones here if you ask them if they know what it means they'll yell "Freedom!!"

The civil war was about slavery but not in the way most people are taught. And I can't remember the thingy anymore but if i do i'll post it back up. I think told EHM about it last year. Ask him.

no. like stated above it was about how the southern states wanted a loose confedericy of powerful states, and the north wanted a strong federal government.

Slavery is the issue that the two groups butted heads over, but the issue could have been solved with compromises that worked (or were enforced) like they had tried so many times before.
