Since Mark Koch stopped doing the CF thing, who took over his role? I know there's someone who does it. Come out, come out, wherever you are!

75 Repu 02-22-2005 03:47 PM

like veneer for a desktop? like formica?

Seppuku 02-22-2005 03:49 PM

I can make stuff but i require 5k up front in cash, 25 prepaid buyers, and a plane ticket out of the country and all orders non-refundable.

Strange, that's how my operation works as well!

Rob x-7 02-22-2005 08:10 PM

he stopped doing it because there is no money to be made, anyone else who does it will stop doing it because there is no money to be made

Sinful7 02-22-2005 09:29 PM

Well, who's doing it for a hobby then? Jeez.

banzaitoyota 02-22-2005 09:31 PM

FikseRxSeven 02-23-2005 12:29 AM

but you can contact mazdaspeed7 he has a lot of experience working with carbon fiber

cymfc3s 02-23-2005 12:53 AM

arent veneers the cosmetic things you get over your teeth?? CF veneers would look better than gold i think...

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif That's what I was thinking when I read the title...why would anyone want carbon fiber fronts?

Seppuku 02-23-2005 01:10 AM

Its lighter so it makes you faster have you learned nothing from ricers!

If I remember i'll talk to him on aim about it sometime. Thing is you'd have to have enough people to make it worthwhile and then i dunno. Though FD owners seem to have more money than 2nd geners.

Something like this?: http://www.ftd-technics.co.uk/ It looks surprisingly genuine.

Jackass https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png I wanted to do that way before you did it, so we'll just have to match. Besides, I thought you had the '99 Spec lip.

That is pretty cool, but I'm lookin' for the real thing.

SPD Racing FC 02-23-2005 11:58 AM

we can make almost anything out of CF, but we would need 10 orders ot start making them

Sinful7 02-23-2005 12:03 PM

Interesting.. I guess I just wanted my OE R-1 lip covered in 3k Twill and clearcoated.

Are you saying you need 10 orders to do that, or 10 orders to make a mold and produce full carbon pieces?

SPD Racing FC 02-23-2005 03:24 PM

wow thats more work than the whle overlaying process for carbon fiber

Rob x-7 02-23-2005 07:58 PM

you will cry when you tap a curb and that overlay comes loose or cracks

I have ways around that whole cracking thing...

Rob x-7 02-23-2005 08:26 PM

please share, I fix $1,000,000 boats that crack, how can you stop a lip from cracking?

GreyGT-C 02-23-2005 08:29 PM

don't run into ****....

G2G 02-23-2005 08:31 PM

Strap an Emu to the front of it.

actually my front lip is fairly flexible, i placed a strip of 1/4" rubber under the lip, and i've hit several bumps and humps along the way without it cracking .

i dont think homemade carbon fiber can be made rigid unlike the properly treated carbon fiber from boats...

here are some pics of me bending a peice of carbon fiber i made a while back and one that mark koch made

Rob x-7 02-23-2005 08:52 PM

is that you stepping on it?

how thin is that thing?

one layer of CF, might as well put vinyl on top!

FikseRxSeven 02-23-2005 09:01 PM

yeah im the one stepping on it. its pretty hard, and i was actually putting some effort to bend it.... obviously within safe amounts of force.

its about 2-3mm thick... i tried to take pics but not sure if they came out right.. here they are though.

the other one i made though has just enough epoxy that the weave wont unravel, so thats why its very flexible

obviously 1 layer is enough for cosmetic purposes such as these applications, i think anything thicker than a couple of layers where you need to use a lot of epoxy will not be very flexible, specially if its rigid as a function, like **** in real cars and boats

Its all in the resin. The cloth isnt what determines if the structure is brittle or as flexible as urethane.

75 Repu 02-23-2005 09:04 PM

you smell something?

Rob x-7 02-24-2005 05:58 AM

I dont know how you change the properties of epoxy resin to become flexible?

I guess I always assume the worst, tap a curb, fine, hit it and crackola.

stomp on that sill and it will break, stand on it gently and it flexes, its all in the impact.

Sinful7 02-24-2005 08:58 AM

I thought about that. I'm just gonna go ahead and not hit curbs. It's not like I drive my FD to the store or anything. I really only take it out when I'm confident in my abilities and there's a low traffic level. Can't risk ******' my baby up!

That would be very nice looking... But why did they make the front bump out (outline) where the liscence plate is on the stock bodypiece.

Sinful7 02-24-2005 10:03 AM

Umm.. I meant R1/R2, not '99-Spec. As to why they made a plate holder - I assume so you have a place to mount a license plate? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif
