not much unless he's department head. there are very few single people who design for big companies, i can think of bmw and their single designer, but for most companies they use many and they dont get paid THAT great. aka, <70k

It depends on which part of "designing" you are referring to. And as papasmurf mentioned, you make more money if you are head of a department.
I'm assuming that you're talking about the exterior? Some of the manufacturers have strictly in house design departments. (Nissan and Mazda for example). Others may use a third party company to help w/ the designs of their concepts (like Jeep for example).
A car designer (engineer/designer), can work w/ all sorts of parts of the vehicle. It doesn't necessarily deal w/ solely the exterior.
