Hey all, I finally got a job. And am looking at getting my self another rifle for christmas. Since I don't have that much money ~$600 for initial purchase, I have narrowed it down to a FAL G3 or an AR. I am essentially looking for another plinker to replace my SKS(looking for better accuracy/longer range). I good accuracy to about 500m (although I would like to be able to shoot targets at 800m eventually when I can shoot better).

I am probably going to be accurizing this rifle over time when I get money so maybe info on which of these rifles respond better to being "tuned" I guess (cheaper maybe too).

Go with the AR, you can build it up as you get more money. Easy to change a 16in upper to a 24in upper for more accurate shooting.

As usuaual my little eco-terrorist brother is johnny on the spot with gun posts But yeah, I agree, if you plan to tune the weapon, add furniture etc. For 800m shooting I strongly suggest an AR chambered in .308cal though. The 5.56mm or .223 isnt ballistically capable of that kind of shooting. Whats a FAL G3? To my knowledge Galil an Israelli company makes the FAL and Heckler and Koch out of Germany makes the G3.

Just be advised though, you are gonna have alot of difficult buying a rifle for $600 that is gonna do what you are asking.

Good luck

Should have read FN FAL, H&K G3. My cousin said he could build me an AR, I would just have to get the reciever and a parts kit he said it would be around $600. And I have found FALs, and G3s for about the same.

If I were to buy some better parts and work for it down the road like heavier barrel and what not, be good for 500m, that would be plently.

If you want real accuracy, screw semis. They're getting better, but bolts are still the king. Semi-auto rifles are for combat or cowboys.

When you see the light, you should look into the Tikka 595 Sporter, best cheap target/sniper style gun I've ever owned. My Sako will walk it, but for way more money.

I agree with Silver Seven as far as semis not being as accurate as bolt action. I assume you know that. But take my word for it, you are going to be hard pressed to pick up a consistent, accurate AR platform for $600. Especially at the ranges you are looking at.

lol but with most bolt action rifles you only got 5 rounds tops to shoot before you have SLOWYLY reload. Way better to shove a 30 rounder in and let whatever it is have it.

Sure, but the Tikka does have a drop out box. Get a few extra mags and you can easily have 30 rounds on tap.
