so i went to the DMV, and it was interesting to see in light of our "budget crisis"

they had giant banners announcing they would be closed on fridays and saturdays

then i walk in and discover that the budget crisis, means they remodeled the entire building and just have fewer windows, they used to have 28ish now they have 12.

they really just dont seem to even understand the concept of saving money

Governments work slow. Like, really, really slow.

The building renovation was probably planned and approved in 1989.

I do work for the local bay constables, fish and wildlife, police, fire, and coast guard, not huge jobs and it takes 6-7 months for the paperwork to go through after you give them a estimate, then another 6 months at least before you see the payment when you finally get the job.

I cant imagine a whole building renovation, lol

It doesn't surprise me, I work for the county part time, they have been offering $20,000 dollars to people to retire early Some other stuff too like extra years on your time served and all this ****. Going on and on about how they can't give raises they dont have the money, they can't hire new people to replace people who quit, etc, etc.... I went into work a couple weeks ago and noticed they had all new vhf radios, replaced the antennas, new computer, new router, etc, etc.... The deal is or so I am told is a lot of these county's and cities had money set aside for new **** and remodels all that **** and they are now being told if they don't spend it they are going to lose it, so they are frantically buying anything they can and laying people off.

Sounds like here...the city got all these brand-new vehicles...why the **** does the transit system need someone to drive around in a brand-new focus?

That's how it's always worked in government, I've even heard of illegal activities in following purchasing rules, just so they could spend their money as fast as possible.

The budget system they use encourages this horrible behavior. They're budgeted one year for the amount they spent the previous year. So if you spend less than you're given, you're given less the following year. So at the end of the fiscal year, tons of buying happens. At FWC, they would buy trucks, boats, and computers all in May (fiscal year ends June 30). I worked for another state agency that would go crazy buying envelopes, paper, and general office supplies in May (I'm talking pallets worth, I worked in the warehouse).

Now I work for a non-profit insurance company. Fiscal year ends in December. I think we purchased 30 laptops to replace old ones, but that's it, and we're not even hurting for cash yet.
