The bipartisan commission will be tasked with exploring a number of topics, including "whether a workable, fair and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the nation."

I found this line interesting.

I kind of like the idea of that, but I'm not sure how it would pan out in practice. I know other countries have something similar. I think it would instill some patriotism back into the people, or it could end horribly.

edit:

Countries with mandatory military service, listed here (wikipedia).

No commentary from me, was just opening the idea up for discussion.

It's a good idea until it's your son headed to a war you don't believe in. It's one thing if it's your choice and you believe in where your going and what your fighting for and its another if its an oil war for your kids life.

Sorry an 18 year old from my home town died in Iraq because he was too poor to go to college... He died in hope of being able to earn a higher education.

Its one thing IF we were fighting for our freedom - but lets not kid ourselves we fight for oil while people starve in the US... Are we really spending our tax dollars where it counts?

Amendment XIII

While I believe Baldy has a very good point, would it not behoove us to; rather then force young americans into some form of gov't service, to take a look at WHY young americans are not signing up for things like the military and volunteer organizations? What has changed in America from the days prior to WWI when young americans willfully and proudly joined the armed forces and prior to the draft (est 1940)? Maybe taking a look at the problem and attempting to solve it would serve our country better then ignoring the root problem and finding a "workaround".

What I am saying is, that maybe we would be better served instilling patriotism that leads to voluntary govt service as opposed to forcing patriotism by involuntary servitude?
