For some reason this story has captured my intention, I think because I find it so unbelievable. I really believe that the law enforcement, parole officers, etc.... were negligent. All I've read about it has lead me to this conclusion, I mean the whole story is insane. When I say they were negligent I'm not just talking about the cops that went out years later after a neighbor had called the cops and said their were kids living in the back yard or when they questioned this psychopath after another girl disappeared. I'm talking rom the get go here. It would seem to me that basic detective work could have put this one to rest, but instead they focused on the step dad, even though kids on the school bus had corroborated his story. The first thing I would do when i child was kidnapped would be to look at all local sex offenders, then I would look at all similar crimes committed in the same area, this second one would have lead them right to the door of her kidnapper within days. He had kidnapped, raped and tortured a woman a few miles from where this girl was kidnapped. He was convicted and spent 11 of his 50 years in prison and shortly after kidnapped this young girl in plain sight. It has lead me to the conclusion that if anything like this happened to anyone I knew I would hire a private investigator. I think a good PI would have found this young girl in a limited amount of time for ***** sake the case was eventually solved by a College Campus Cop!!!!!

This guy was obviously insane, he kidnapped a girl, raped her and forced her to live in the back yard with her two kids. There were 3 children living in the house that a parole officer visited and never knew about, what was this guy doing? He had already popped the guy on a parole violation, his crazy wife kept the kid during this 5 month period.

People that dealt with this guy and lived near him were also involved IMO, i know it sounds strange, but who here has lived in neighborhood where you could do anything without having the nosy neighbors complain? He had tents, double fences and children shitting in buckets. i couldn't get away with not mowing my back yard when I lived in a neighborhood. This guy was showing all the signs of being ******* nuts. He had a blog, he was handing out cd's about ******* young girls, he was a registered sex offender, neighbors knew this wouldn't you be curious as to your registered sex offenders comings and goings? Did he live in a neighborhood of criminals that kept to themselves?

Her, her family and even her "children" lives were destroyed because of a complete failure of the system to do what it is supposedly set up to do and I think that's what really gets me. 18 years a registered sex offender, convicted kidnapper and rapist was allowed to torture a child and later a young woman, women and even another young child had disappeared in the area, the guy is on parole you could toss his house without a warrant, without justification and no one even bothered to walk in the back yard???? It would have take a quick stroll around his property to realize **** was fucked up, something wasn't right. He what were obviously childrens' bedrooms OUTSIDE in tents and NO children. Keep in mind it doesn't sound like the guy made much effort to conceal his captors, he was completely insane and thought nothing of forcing 3 children to live in the back yard in tents shitting in buckets. In fact before his arrest he delivered a manifesto to the FBI explaining his genius and told a reporter that he would eventually be recognized for the "miracle that happened in that home".

The whole thing puts a big question mark the effectiveness on police, and parole board officials.. Like you say, look at all the locals, With a kids life in the balance, a warrant would've been an easy enough task to serve.

They use to say the law is only of use to people once they are victims, but I don't even think thats the case anymore.

I am of the opinion it does more to protect criminals and define what we can't do to them instead of serving to protect the public. If he had been had been identified to the public as a sex offender on his first offence, chances are the neighbouring people would have spoken up right a lot earlier.

good points!

its really nuts, there seem to be plenty of people in my yard measuring my parking job, and weather the car has moved in the last 48 minutes or not, but i guess i could have hostages in the back yard and that's ok?

ps, i had coffee next to some police officers yesterday, and one got called on the radio, he ignored it, and one of the other cops was like "when you said xxx, didn't they know you were at coffee?". so that would be ok, except i guess these guys were ON DUTY...

pps, the police blotter here is like

11am wallet lost

2pm wallet found

6pm noise complaint, officers could not find
