I know its a little late for the opinions but i figured id put my $0.02 in anyway. First of all you have to ask yourself how much money you have to spend. The hard part will be finding something within your price range.
A VR-4 will cost a lot to keep in good condition, but if you treat it right it will treat you right. I speak from personal experience and can say that you will pay at least 2-3 thousand in repairs and maintenance a year. Aftermarket support is not that big yet but the VR-4 is started to get recognized.
Another thing you have to ask yourself is "Do I want a track car or a strip car?"
If you want a track car then don't even think about getting a VR-4. They are not as nimble as the RX-7 and the AWD is a killer on the tight turns. With this you also have to remember that you will be in a different class then the RX-7 so you can still do very good in your class.
As a drag car the VR-4 definetly is not a bad choice for the price. The car has the capabilities of hitting mid 13's with a good driver and about $200 if that in mods. The AWD grips and will give lower 60' then an RX-7, stock for stock, of course.
If you want to go under 12's it will be costly in a VR-4 due to the expense of the aftermarket parts.
Overall both cars have great looks and both perform well in there areas. If you can afford it and want a track and drag car go with the RX-7. If you can't but still want a fast drag car and will be able to afford the maintenence then go for a VR-4 or better yet a Stealth.
Just remember, whatever you get modding a car is an addiction and they will both cost a lot in the end. It all depends on what you can afford now.

my ex had a 3000GT, it was a 95, problems out the *** and only had 40k on it when she bought it.
he has the worst valve tap i have ever heard but for some reason the car just doesnt die.
he has intake, full exhaust turbos back, clutch, boost controller, couple other small mods and the best he has run is a 13.7 cause the kid cant drive for ****.
i have driven the car several times and although it is pretty fast i had more fun in my non turbo S5 FC.
its a grand touring car for a reason....... lots of stupid amenities that you dont need.
